2007 Excellence in Design Award Winners

A bank building in Boise and a near zero energy home in Paterson, N.J., an institutional environmental center in California and an environmental heritage center in Georgia, and a multi-family residence in Calgary demonstrate superior sustainable design.


Environmental Design + Construction magazine’s Fifth Annual Excellence in Design Awards recognize government buildings, institutional facilities, single- and multi-family residences that demonstrate a clear commitment to green building and sustainable design. Projects considered exhibited a variety of criteria as determined by a panel of judges comprised of ED+C staff members as well as the following key industry professionals:
  • S. Richard Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
  • David Green, Principal in the Housing & Mixed-Use Studio at the architectural firm of Lord, Aeck & Sargent.
  • Peter Levasseur, AIA, LEED AP, Director of Sustainable Design for EwingCole.
  • Jim Nicolow, AIA, LEED AP, a Senior Associate with Lord, Aeck & Sargent.
  • Carl Seville, currently serving on the Green Building Subcommittee and the Green Building Education Curriculum Committee of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
  • Steven Winter, FAIA, founder of Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA).
  • Jerry Yudelson, PE, MBA, LEED AP, Chair of the 2007 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo.
and the 2007 Excellence in Design award winners are:


Commercial, Office, Industrial, Corporate

Banner Bank Building in Boise, Idaho, (The Christensen Corp.), submitted by HDRArchitecture.

Commercial finalists include 223 Yale in Seattle (NBBJ); Building C Renovation/Employment and Conference Center, San Antonio (Zachry Construction Corporation); Visteon Village Corporate Headquarters, Van Buren Township, Mich. (SmithGroup, Inc.); One & Two Potomac Yard, Arlington, Va. (Sustainable Design Consulting); Jefferson Green in Albuquerque, N.M. (D/P/S); and Abercorn Common Shopping Center in Savannah, Ga. (Mulherin PR Consulting, Inc.)

Single-Family Residential Home

Institutional, Non-Profit Organization, Educational or Healthcare

Institutional finalists include: Animal Foundation Dog Adoption Park in Las Vegas (Tate Snyder Kimsey); Pacific Lutheran University, Morken Center for Learning and Technology in Tacoma, Wash. (Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLP); Gerding Theater at the Armory in Portland, Ore. (Hoffman Construction Company); Harvard University, University Operations Services Blackstone Station Adaptive Reuse in Cambridge, Mass. (Bruner/Cott & Associates, Inc.); Benjamin D. Finalists in the Government category include: East Grand Rapids Community Center/City of East Grand Rapids, Michigan in East Grand Rapids, Mich. (Cox Medendorp Olson Architects, Inc.); Mead Wildlife Area DNR Headquarters & Education Center in Milladore, Wis. (Thomas Brown, Architect); Social Security Administration Teleservice Center in Auburn, Wash. (TVA Architects Inc.); Sweetwater Creek State Park Visitor Center in Lithia Springs, Ga. (Georgia Department of Natural Resources); Santa Clarita Transit Maintenance Facility in Santa Clarita, Calif. (HOK).

The winner and finalists in the Government category will be highlighted in ED+C’s October 2007 issue.


Multi-Family Residential (Condominium and Apartment)

Finalists in the multi-family residential category include: Plaza Apartments in San Francisco (LMS Architects); 53 Standish Street in Cambridge, Mass.(Aedi Development); PineRidge in Kethum, Idaho (Living Architecture); Brunswick-Holborn & Columbia Wood Apartments in Boston (Mostue & Associates Architects, Inc.); Starland Lofts in Savannah, Ga. (Lominack Kolman Smith Architects).
