Pittsburgh (September 17, 2004) – PPG Industries has introduced EcoLogical Building Solutions, a collection of glass, coatings and paint for sustainable design. The collection is outlined in a new 12-page booklet that provides specific guidance on how PPG products can help architects earn LEED credits for their projects or meet ASTM E 2129 standards for sustainable building. The brochure also details how numerous PPG products advance the principles of environmentally sustainable building.

Among the most notable products in the EcoLogical Building Solutions collection is Pure Performance® paint, a zero-VOC interior latex paint from Pittsburgh Paints®. Because of its zero-VOC emissions and virtual lack of odor, Pure Performance paint has won accolades from green building advocates, including its designation as the first paint ever to earn the Green Seal Glass A Certification.

The brochure also provides information about Oceans of Color™, PPG’s industry-leading collection of spectrally selective tinted glasses. Spectrally selective glasses are defined are defined by the U.S. Department of Energy as any architectural glass having a Light to Solar Gain ratio (LSG) of 1.25 or better. LSG is the ratio of the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) to Visible Light Transmittance (VLT). Of the four glasses included in the Oceans of Color collection, none has an LSG lower than 1.41, yet all have a VLT value of at least 60 percent in a 1” IGU with clear glass.

Additionally, when these glasses are combined in insulating glass units fabricated with inboard lites of Sungate® Low-Emissivity Glass or Solarban® 60 Solar Control Low-E Coated Glass, Oceans of Color can produce LSG ratings as high as 1.73 and SHGC ratios of 0.30 or better. A clear aesthetic can be achieved with Solarban 80, the company’s leading solar control low-E glass, which has an LSG of 1.96 and SHGC ratio of 24 percent.

For architects interested in sustainable design, these glazing options translate into significant energy savings along with a high degree of visible light transmittance. The result is significantly reduced demand on artificial light and cooling systems.

PPG also makes a variety of exterior coatings that are LEED- and ASTM E 2129-compliant. For instance, Coraflon™ ADS Coatings are a colorful new line of field-applied fluoropolymer coatings that can be applied to weathered building panels and other exterior building elements, such as walls, roofs, doors, window frames, column covers and handrails.

By using these coatings to restore building components, architects can help their projects earn LEED credit or meet ASTM E 2129 standards for extending the life of existing building stock.

Similarly, Duranar® SPF coatings from PPG allow architects to specify roof coatings in a variety of colors while meeting ENERGY STAR limits for reflectance. The combined aesthetic and performance characteristics of Duranar SPF coatings can expand design possibilities while promoting cooler buildings, longer-lasting roofs and reductions in heat-related smog.
