The AIA has announced a plan to require its members to complete four (4) hours of "Sustainable Education Learning Units" starting in January 2009.
Not to be outdone, apparently USGBC has lined up their own separate Educational Provider Program to begin accrediting "green" education programs for CEU credits. I understand that the USGBC is considering or will make their EPP program credits a requirement for maintenance of the LEED-AP certification.
As a CE education provider, I'm more than a little concerned…
1) Are the AIA CES and USGBC EPP folks talking to each other?
2) Are they writing complementary program standards? Will the curriculum measures be the same?
3) Will credits for attending an AIA SELU program count toward USGBC EPP credit… and vice versa?
It just seems terribly greedy on the USGBC's part to launch its own CE program in light of the AIA CES dictum that goes into effect January 1st. Of course, it could be a chicken-and-egg scenario… if the AIA is now rushing to put its SELU in place in reaction to the USGBC, then shame on them.
Either way, this looks like a great green double dip if you ask me.
Title: USGBC's Education Provider Program By: Taryn Holowka Posted: July 14, 2008 8:54 AM
Hello Evan,
I wanted to respond to your email to EDC below about USGBC's Education Provider Program. USGBC's Professional Development Committee, which oversees the Education Provider Program (EPP) is working to coordinate with the AIA CES and other building industry associations and licensing boards requiring sustainability-themed continuing education. While the AIA Continuing Education Quality Assurance Panel has not yet released details regarding the specific requirements of their Sustainable Design Learning Units, AIA CES staff serve on the USGBC Professional Development Committee and have actively participated in the development of the EPP program as well as ongoing discussions regarding coordination with the AIA requirements announced this spring.
The USGBC's Education Provider Program was piloted in 2006 and launched in 2007. The EPP review process is very stringent, raising the bar for professional development. Geared to the broad range of professions within the green industry, the program is not limited to design.
The USGBC EPP identifies top quality green building educational offerings that meet the growing demand for green building knowledge. The program is intentionally designed to complement other industry continuing education requirements by making qualifying green building education programs more accessible to building professionals. The online catalog of approved Education Provider courses at www.greenbuild365.org highlights which continuing education programs award credits for each offering.
Evan, please let me know if you have any follow-up questions and thank you!
