Welcome To The Carpet And Rug Institute’s Focus On Sustainability

Environmental Design + Construction magazine is pleased to introduce the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Special Section focused on the sustainable attributes of carpet. Not only have carpet industry manufacturers embraced sustainability, they also continue to develop environmental products and contribute to reducing the negative impact on the environment. The following articles are contributed by Werner Braun and Robert Peoples of the Carpet And Rug Institute (CRI), the national trade association representing the carpet and rug industry. Headquartered in Dalton, Ga., the institute’s membership consists of manufacturers representing more than 90 percent of all carpet produced in the United States, and suppliers of raw materials and services to the industry. There is continued coordination with other segments of the industry, such as distributors, retailers, and installers.

Werner Braun

Werner Braun is the president of the CRI. He previously served as senior director, international affairs, of the Chlorine Chemistry Council Of The Chemical Manufacturers Association. Prior to that service, Braun was manager of environmental strategic issues for chemicals and performance products with the Dow Chemical Company. His duties in 30 years with Dow involved public policy advocacy, issues management, regulatory and governmental affairs management, and health and environmental affairs management.

Robert Peoples

Robert Peoples, Phd, is the director of sustainability for the CRI, executive director of the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) and president of the Environmental Impact Group. In these roles, he serves to integrate a wide variety of initiatives that deal with sustainability on a national level. His efforts span new business development working with entrepreneurs and the development of a unified national carpet standard. Prior to joining CRI, Dr. Peoples spent 24 years with Monsanto/Solutia.
