Local Non-Profit Formed to Fight Global Warming
A local Boston-area resident (and professional architect) has launched a new non-profit corporation, with the dual goals of helping to fight global warming and providing education on environmental issues. The organization is called "One Penny Per Mile, Inc." (OPPM) and, as the name suggests, has a unique formulation geared to help achieve these goals. OPPM will accept donations from automobile drivers at the rate of one penny for every mile driven. The donated funds will be used to develop new energy systems powered by renewable ‘green’ sources, such as the sun and wind.

 | New Sustainability Analysis Dashboard
Mad*Pow Media Solutions announced its collaboration with Autodesk to demonstrate the company’s technology concept for a new sustainability analysis dashboard. In combination with the Revit platform for building information modeling (BIM), the new concept demonstrates how architects, engineers and designers could benefit from real-time graphical feedback about impact of design decisions on the potential LEED green building rating of a project.

The Largest, Solar-Powered Rice Mill in the U.S.
Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. has provided more than 5,500 photovoltaic (PV) modules for a 1-megawatt solar electric system at Far West Rice Mills in Nelson, Calif. The system is expected to deliver 1,440,000 kWh a year — approximately 75 percent of the plant’s total energy needs. The multi-million dollar solar project, installed by Pacific Power Management of Auburn, Calif., qualifies for $1.8 million in rebates from Pacific Gas & Electric.

 | Paragon Prairie Tower Wins 2008 Spectrum Award from Coverings
LATICRETE, a manufacturer of systems for the installation of ceramic tile and stone, provided a GREENGUARD-certified installation system for the 5,050 square feet of SICIS mosaic glass tiles installed by the Des Moines Marble & Mantel Company as the exterior façade of the 10 story Paragon Prairie Tower in Urbandale, Iowa. The LATICRETE System was supplied locally by Pete Bird at the Sunderland Brothers Company. At Coverings 2008, the Paragon Prairie Tower project took home a Spectrum Award in the category of Commerical – Mosaic/Glass Tile.
