Emeryville, Calif. — Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) announced that five manufacturers have earned certification under its new SCS Sustainable Choice label for furniture. The certification ensures that products earning the label have met the sustainability requirements of the new Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association Sustainability Standard (BIFMA SS).
The BIFMA Sustainability Standard measures four elements of environmental performance: materials, energy and atmosphere, human and ecosystem health, and social responsibility. Products must meet prerequisites in each category and meet additional criteria to qualify for one of three certification tiers: Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
“Sustainable Choice certification marks the next level of achievement for companies that strive to make a real difference in their environmental performance,” said Stowe Hartridge-Beam, Program Manager at SCS, “We’re thrilled to work with such motivated clients and to be able to help them communicate their achievements.”
A variety of products, including systems furniture, casegoods, tables, and seating, were certified under the Sustainable Choice program, SCS announced. These products had previously earned certification under the indoor air quality standards of the SCS Indoor Advantage program. Visit
