LEED Creditable, Color & Style… Terra Green Ceramics

It is always to a designer’s pleasure to work with a truly sustainable product that offers style, color and statement. And when it comes to the most sustainable floor covering, nothing can compete with ceramic tile and a product life of plus-50 years. While the LEED rating system doesn’t offer credit for sustainable product lifespan, the rating system does value recycled content.

And, no other commercial ceramic tile product can claim more than Terra Green Ceramics with its SCS-certified, 55 percent recycled content.

Terra Green Ceramics has been continuously manufacturing recycled glass tile since the 1980s. There are six tile collections: the popular Terra Traffic and Terra Classic, and the newer collections of Elements, Crackle, Fusion and Metallics. All six collections are SCS-certified for 55 percent pre-consumer recycled glass content. In fact, unlike other manufacturers, we only produce recycled content tile products. That means very reasonable lead times, and continuous production capacity. Based in Richmond, Ind., the plant is in America’s heartland.

We talked to designers and installers about Terra Green. One designer told us, “Terra Green has a true ceramic appearance, unlike the cookie cutter precision fabricated tiles out on the market. I love the fact that the colors in all six collections integrate and work together, flowing off each other so I can combine products like Elements and Fusion without conflict… they all work together... sizes, colors, trim. This is a true ceramic tile product.” A commercial tile contractor commented, “…the product has the unique characteristics of a handcrafted tile, at a competitive price, and meets all the tile standards including slip resistance.”

The benefits of using ceramic tile are many. Like the majority of hard surface flooring products, ceramic tile is durable, easy to clean and maintain. However, ceramic tile trumps its hard surface brethren with its’ water resistance, easy maintenance, and long life making it the designer and owner choice for restrooms and shower facilities, kitchen floors and walls, and entrance lobbies. As exterior wall cladding, glazed ceramic tile is often the owner choice for street level wall sections providing color, pattern, and an easy-to-clean surface.

Terra Green Ceramics products can be found in an estimated 50 percent of LEED-certified and built—LEED-guidelines projects, and many more commercial buildings and high-end residential projects. You’ll find Terra Green installed at PNC banks, many Krispy Kreme stores, fire stations, libraries, community centers along the West Coast, government buildings all over America, the NRDC offices, some Kaiser Permanente medical office buildings, colleges and universities, and retail stores and malls throughout the US, Canada and beyond.

Terra Green Ceramics is more than a design choice, it is a sustainable choice.
