New Thin Film Solar Module Production Facility
Jena, Germany -- SCHOTT, the international technology group, will be investing 60 million Euros (approximately 72 million dollars) to enable its subsidiary, SCHOTT Solar, Inc. to build a manufacturing facility for thin-film solar electricity modules in Jena, Germany. The facility's manufacturing capacity will exceed 30 megawatts (MW) per year. The facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2007.
The new production facility will manufacture thin film solar electricity modules based on amorphous silicon. This process calls for silicon to be vapor deposited onto glass.

Recycling Network Adds Healthcare Recycling Projects in Three States
Concord, N.H. -- The Institution Recycling Network (IRN / www.ir-network.com ), a cooperative recycling organization that works with over 125 colleges and universities, hospitals, and other institutions to improve the performance and economics of their recycling programs, has been brought on board to recycle at three new healthcare projects, including all aspects of waste management for the largest active hospital construction project in New England at Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center; waste planning, handling, and recordkeeping for the Maine General Hospital Cancer Treatment Center (Augusta, Maine); and deconstruction of an old warehouse complex in advance of construction of the new
Providence (R.I.) Community Health Center.

Alexandria, Va. -- The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) launched MasterFormat.com, and in conjunction with Construction Specifications Canada, kicked-off the MasterFormat Maintenance Program, during the 50th Annual CSI Show & Convention in Las Vegas, March 28 through April 1.
Transitioning MasterFormat 2004 Edition--a master list of titles and numbers for organizing data about construction requirements, products, and activities used for well over 70 percent of the commercial and institutional building projects in the U.S. and Canada--to the web at www.MasterFormat.com has enabled this resource to be updated in real-time, as well as providing an easily searchable database for quick and thorough reference. Green Power: Renewable Energy Sources
Washington, D.C. - EPA announced 100 percent of its power consumption at its Washington, D.C. headquarters, as well the vast majority of energy at over 30 regional and laboratory facilities, will be supplied by green, renewable power.
Energy for the EPA Green Power Purchase Program includes sources such as biogas (methane from landfills), biomass (plant-derived material), geothermal, and wind.
EPA has contracted to purchase nearly 260 million kilowatt hours of green power each year for 10 of the agency's offices and 21 laboratories, which places the agency among the top three green-power consumers in the country. Only the U.S. Air Force and Whole Foods Markets buy more green power.

Online Lighting Calculator Determines Energy Savings
Schaumburg, Ill. - All Tech Lighting, a design firm that integrates new lighting technologies to maximize facility appeal and reduce energy costs, has posted a free online energy-savings calculator to help building owners understand the financial impact of replacing or retrofitting their existing lighting to energy-efficient systems.
The resource, available on All Tech Lighting's website at www.alltechlighting.com , allows users to compare the energy consumption of their current lighting with energy-efficient replacements.
McDonough Joins SCIP Company Advisory Board, Joint Agreement with BASF
Florham Park, N.J. -- Green Sandwich Technologies (North Hollywood, Calif.) announced that William McDonough, a three-time presidential award winner for sustainable design, has joined the company's advisory board. Additionally, Green Sandwich Technologies have signed a joint marketing agreement with BASF and have selected foam made from BASF's Styropor expandable polystyrene (EPS) resins for its most popular line of structural concrete insulating panels (SCIPs).

SBIC Named NAHB's Green Advocate of the Year
Washington, D.C. -- The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) have been named Green Advocate of the Year in the Group category at the 2006 National Green Building Awards gala. The awards were presented during the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) Annual National Green Building Conference in Albuquerque, N.M. The Council was recognized for driving significant changes in energy and resource efficient new home construction through its outreach, advocacy, and educational initiatives. New Report Details 15 New Efficiency Standards for Common Products
Boston, Mass. and Washington, D.C. --New appliance energy efficiency standards could save consumers and businesses billions of dollars, ease pressure on high energy prices, eliminate the need for as many as 40 power plants, and cut global warming pollution, according to a report released by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP).

First Prepaid Recycling Program Approved by Maine DEP
Port Washington, Wis. -- The Technical Solutions division of Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Onyx Environmental Services) announced that its OnyxPak product line has been approved for use in the state of Maine, and is the first prepaid, standard-shipping recycling program authorized by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The OnyxPak program encourages recycling and seeks to increase recycling rates of mercury-containing wastes by offering a convenient and cost-effective system for smaller generators to comply with Maine's Universal Waste Rule.

Pathmark Partners With Northern Power To Install Renewable Solar Power Systems
Waitsfield, Vt. - As part of a series of Pathmark Stores, Inc.'s (www.pathmark.com ) initiatives to help the environment, improve efficiencies, reduce cost and create growth opportunities through a transformation in energy practices, Northern Power, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp., has been awarded a contract by Pathmark to provide three turnkey photovoltaic (PV) systems to the company's Garwood, Elizabeth, and Lawnside, N.J., supermarkets. The turnkey systems, which will have a total capacity of 750 kilowatts, will be designed, built and commissioned by Northern Power in association with New Jersey-based BGA LLC Engineering. Moisture Vapor Barrier Coatings Earn GLP Seal of Approval From CRI
Middleton, Mass. - The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI / Dalton, Ga.) has awarded its Green Label +PLUS environmental seal of approval to Bostik Flooring Group for its DURABOND D-250 and D-261 moisture vapor barrier coatings.
Products such as DURABOND D-250 and D-261 earned the right to carry the Green Label +PLUS symbol on their packaging after rigorous testing determined they emit low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Swinerton Builders Project Receives LEED Certification
Los Gatos, Calif. -- General contractor Swinerton Builders (www.swinerton.com) announced that the Welcoming Center and Dining Facility at Presentation Center, a 264-acre interfaith retreat and conference center located in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Los Gatos, has received LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
ASLA Makes Headway on Green Roof Project

National Design Center Earns LEED Silver CI
Dallas - Opened October 2005, The Herman Miller, Inc. (www.hermanmiller.com) National Design Center in Dallas has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in the Commercial Interiors (CI) category.
The facility received 29 credit points from the USGBC, most notably for its use of 100 percent green power and its 13,000 square feet of usable space which boasts 20-foot ceilings and vast window expanses.
LACCD Receives Savings By Design Award for Sustainable Energy Efforts
Los Angeles -- The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), one of the largest community college districts in the country, was honored with a Savings By Design award for adopting and implementing sustainable energy principles at its nine colleges by the Southern California Gas Company. The award was presented to LACCD at the first-ever Energy Efficiency Expo, sponsored by The Gas Company.

Tricycle Sponsors ASID Research for new Sustainable Design CEUs

BOMA Launches BEEP Energy-Saving Solutions Training Program
Washington, D.C. - The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA / www.boma.org ) International is launching a breakthrough training initiative on April 7, 2006, to help the commercial real estate industry counter rising energy costs and reduce energy consumption. The BOMA Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP), developed by the BOMA Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program, is supported in part by a grant from EPA. The program provides no- and low-cost strategies for reducing the industry's annual $24 million energy bill by as much as 30 percent, while continuing to provide tenants and owners with comfortable space.
