ENERGY STAR, Changing the World One Light at a Time Watertown, Mass. - October 4, 2006, is ENERGY STAR Change a Light Day across America. As part of National Energy Month, held in October, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are encouraging consumers to make the switch to ENERGY STAR-qualified light bulbs. The month-long Change a Light, Change the World campaign encourages Americans to take the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge and replace their standard incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which use at least two-thirds less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to ten
times longer. "Father of Green Chemistry" Honored with Heinz Award for the Environment The Heinz Awards, which are chaired by Teresa Heinz, the Heinz Family Foundation, are presented in five distinct categories with each recipient receiving a $250,000 prize. This year's recipient in the Environment category is Paul Anastas, the founder of the Green Chemistry Institute in Alexandria, Va. Manufacturing Plants Recognized by EPA for Energy Efficiency Washington, D.C. - Seventeen U.S. manufacturing plants were first-time winners of EPA's ENERGY STAR award in recognition of their energy-efficient operations that prevented some 3 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. The manufacturers' efforts not only cut pollution but also lowered energy consumption and reduced costs. Parents Grade Schools' IAQ Roswell, Ga. - According to a national survey, increased absenteeism, decreased concentration levels and declines in academic performance represent some of the areas of concern voiced by parents of school-aged children that can result from poor indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools. Conducted by Opinion Research Corporation on behalf of Kimberly-Clark Filtration Products, the survey revealed that half of the 476 parents polled were concerned about the quality of the air children breathed while at school; eight out of 10 said they believed a school's poor IAQ can have a direct negative effect on a student's academic performance and health.
