Welcome to the ED+C eNews for April 2007

April 22, 2007, marks the 38th Earth Day, an international celebration of our planet. Events ranging from walks, picnics, contests and more will be held all over the country this month — at corporations and architecture firms, in schools and in our own backyards. For ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day, browse around the web. In addition to www.earthday.net that lists events in your area, several other sites provide information on Earth Day and related events (www.earthday.gov and www.earthsite.org, for example). Additionally, Earth Day Network (EDN) has joined as a partner in the Go Organic! for Earth Day campaign, along with Organic Trade Association and MusicMatters. The primary mission of Go Organic! for Earth Day is to increase national sales and awareness of organic products, as well as for Earth Day. For more information, visit them online at www.organicearthday.org/CelebrateEarthDay.htm.
ED+C will be launching an Earth Day Blog on our website in the coming weeks, and would love to hear from our readers on any activities they have planned in celebration. Visit www.EDCmag.com today to check out our new Enviro Blog, as well as the online-only Web Exclusives section.
And while you're online at www.EDCmag.com, be sure to become a registered site user. It's free, and only takes a few minutes + will give you access to ED+C archives, as well as other great features. Besides, you might be one of the lucky registrants we randomly select to win valuable CD libraries or exclusive LEED Guides.
Until next time,
Joe Mayton
ED+C Associate Editor

Germicidal Lamps Validated for Two-Year Performance Lebanon, Ind. — American Ultraviolet Company’s(www.americanultraviolet.com
) low-pressure standard, and high-output quartz, UVC Germicidal Lamps have been tested and validated to effectively perform for 17,000 hours (two years) when operated on high frequency electronic ballasts. According to the company, the UVC Germicidal Lamps from American Ultraviolet Company provide safe, direct exposure to 254nm UVC radiation, which, when given appropriate exposure time, inactivates the DNA and RNA of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, mold spores, yeast and protozoa), making them unable to reproduce. The resulting benefits include increased HVAC operating efficiency, longer blower life and improved air quality.

Cooling Tower Disc Filter System Uses Minimal Backwash Water Daytona Beach — Miller-Leaman, Inc.’s (
www.millerleaman.com
) self-cleaning Turbo-Disc Filter side-stream skid systems are designed to remove particulate and other contaminants from cooling water, complementing the water treatment program by keeping heat transfer surfaces clean, resulting in lower energy costs for the facility. According to the company, the filters are designed for HVAC and industrial cooling tower and chilled water applications, and the three-dimensional polypropylene disc media uses a fraction of the backwash water used by conventional sand media filters, resulting in substantial water savings and minimizing the amount of dirty water and water treatment chemicals being backwashed to the city sewer.
