| Welcome to the ED+C eNews for February 2006 |
|
Greetings and welcome to the February 2006 edition of the ED+C eNews.
Nothing beats traveling the planet and experiencing a world of diverse cultures/customs, architecture, and environments, and ED+C is always excited to hear about new locales--especially exotic, all-natural and globally responsible destinations. So, when Monica Schaffer of Diversified Media Design in New York told us about her
recent tropical honeymoon, our ears perked right up. Tiamo Resorts (www.tiamoresorts.com) on South Andros Island in the Bahamas is a truly environmentally friendly, luxurious resort committed to minimizing their environmental impact on this pristine locale, while at the same time maintaining the highest levels of service. Tiamo is 100 percent powered by solar energy, and incorporates three major green build objectives: minimum site impact, passive-cooling, and energy efficiency into their sustainable building design practices. "After
spending our honeymoon at Tiamo, its obvious that a resort can provide guests with all the comforts of the classic 'resort experience' while staying true to 'green' principles on every level. The entire Tiamo staff lives and breathes the eco-friendly mantra while offering up amazing service, food and a range of activities (snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, hiking) to easily rival larger, more well known resorts. After our experience at Tiamo, it is hard to believe that other hotels and resorts don't go green immediately!," Monica said. In an effort to eliminate wasteful paper trails, Tiamo does not do traditional marketing, so Web traffic is a main staple of their business. Visit them
online to book a private beach bungalow at this tropical paradise.
Some other sites to look at that promote ecotourism--or responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of local people--and provide suggestions for destinations across the globe include: www.ecotour.org, and www.ecotourism.org. Sites like these promote environmental conscientiousness and provide useful
resources, such as Tips for Travelers: The Golden Rules of Ecotourism. As a traveler, you will have an effect on the environment and culture of the places you are visiting. Keep These Golden Rules in Mind When You Travel: Learn about your destination before you get there. Read guidebooks and travel articles, and pay particular attention to customs such as greetings, appropriate dress, eating behaviors, and so forth. Follow established guidelines. Stay on trails, pack up your trash, and remain set distances away from wildlife to minimize your effect in sensitive areas. Seek out and support locally owned businesses. Buy locally to ensure maximum community benefit.
All great ideals to take to heart and realize, wherever we roam.
This next week finds me out of the U.S., and in Spain as a guest of Tile of Spain and the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers' Association (ASCER) for the Cevisama (http://cevisama.feriavalencia.com/) International Tile/Ceramics Tradeshow, held Feb. 7 - 11 in Valencia, Spain. ED+C are thrilled by this amazing opportunity, and I myself can't wait to tour the show and travel the region.
Until next time,
Joe Mayton ED+C Associate Editor

New Infrared Camera Diagnoses Hidden Building Costs Oakland, N.J. -- Mikron's new 7815B infrared camera is like an x-ray machine for building diagnostics, the company says, identifying a wide range of invisible problems that add hidden costs to building ownership, such as air infiltration, moisture intrusion, mold, fungus, energy losses, pest infestations, as well as others. According to Mikron, the 7815B combines the highest-resolution microbolometer camera in the industry with a visible light camera and laser target dot to make professional thermal imaging point-and-shoot simple. For more information on the M7815B Building
Inspection camera, visit www.mikroninfrared.com.
Nanotechnology Introduced to Hardwood Flooring Industry Saint-Georges, Quebec, CAN -- Mirage will launch its exclusive new finish, Nanolinx, at Surfaces 2006, Feb. 1-3, Las Vegas; the flooring industry's largest trade show. Manipulating material of this size brings out new properties resulting in the creation of a finish that is clearer, stronger and more flexible, the company says, and the ultra-clear finish brings out the true beauty and character of the flooring's natural wood grain. Mirage
has been granted rights to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) seal, invest heavily in ongoing research and development of wood/reforestation projects, and use only non-toxic manufacturing products. For more information, visit www.miragefloors.com.
Architectural Glass Product Helps Cut Construction, Cooling Costs Pittsburgh -- Solarban 70XL, a new architectural glass product developed by PPG Industries, uses a proprietary solar control low-emissivity (Low-E) coating that transmits high levels of sunlight into a building while blocking a similarly high percentage of the sun's solar energy, and has the potential to help building owners and developers cut their construction costs by several hundred thousand dollars while reducing overall cooling costs by 3 to 5 percent annually, according to an independent report for the company. Computer modeling conducted by the
Architectural Energy Corporation (AEC) of Boulder, Colo., indicates Solarban 70XL glass can dramatically reduce the amount of energy and equipment needed to cool institutional structures, including office buildings, schools and hospitals. For more information, visit www.ppgideascapes.com.
