A Clean Slate

It's the start of a new year. Doesn't it seem odd that the simple passing of December 31 to January 1 can bring with it such a sense of a new beginning? It seems weird that we can just shed a year's worth of negativity with the simple switch of a calendar. If only it were as easy to shed the pounds gained during that lead up to the start of a new year. But that's what New Year Resolutions are for, right?
Personally, the only New Year's Resolution I ever stuck to was the one to never have a New Year's Resolution again. It's worked out pretty well.
While it might be nice to shrug out of the negative embrace 2008 seemed to have, let's keep in mind that some good came out of it. I'm certain that a lot of our readers completed some projects that they were pretty proud of. So, get some resolve and enter your projects in ED+C's
2009 Excellence in Design awards. The deadline is February 1, so there isn't a whole lot of time left. Better act quickly!
And here's to hoping that this year offers far more successes than last.
Cheers,
Derrick Teal ED+C Managing Editor

Insulation Energy Savings: Key Issues and Performance Factors
 Provided by Honeywell
As codes tighten and energy costs skyrocket, there is significant and renewed interest in energy performance of buildings. Various associations, building codes and mandates all point towards higher energy performance and a significant reduction of greenhouse-gas-emitting fossil-fuel energy use in the coming years, resulting in carbon-neutral buildings in the future. This paper will examine the implications of these new codes and standards on increased R-value requirements for roofs and walls, air barriers for all new buildings, and improved mechanical-system efficiency.
Foundation of a Complete Rooftop Support Solution Highland, Ill. - Cooper B-Line's (
www.cooperbline.com
) new Dura-Blok components for its Strut and Pipe Hanger Systems help create a total solution for rooftops by supporting a variety of piping, ducting and other support systems, the company reports. The Dura-Blok channel is through-bolted in all sizes for added strength and security on each piece. A one-inch gap between the blocks allows water to flow freely around longer assemblies. The composition of the product is not sharp or abrasive and no roof penetration or rubber pad is needed, helping to extend roof life. Dura-Blok is made of 100 percent recycled rubber, works to dampen vibration, and has reflective strips on both sides which allow for easy product visibility and
is secure enough that the piece will not float or blow away.
