Welcome to the Targeted ED+C eNews: IAQ
|
|
|
It's in the Air that You Breathe
With building envelopes becoming tighter and tighter for the sake of reducing energy consumption, indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming a much more important facet to consider in construction. Materials that off-gas VOCs or other hazardous substances can no longer vent through porous envelopes and into the atmosphere. Instead, these gasses are being trapped and potentially causing serious damage to the health of the building's occupants.
Because of the importance of this issue, ED+C has partnered with the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute to bring you a special section on IAQ. This Targeted eNews is offers just a sampling of what can be found. For more, visit

Cheers,

Flooring Passes California's Section 01350 Emissions Tests San Francisco - Smith & Fong Co., manufacturer of Plyboo bamboo architectural plywood and flooring, announced that the company's Plyboo bamboo plywood products have passed emissions testing under the criteria of California Section 01350, the most stringent volatile organic compound (VOC)-emissions standards in North America.
According to the company, Smith & Fong's entire product line already meets the California Air Resource Board (CARB)'s Phase I and Phase II regulations for formaldehyde emissions that were passed in 2007. And many of the company's products are 100 percent urea formaldehyde-free, and can contribute to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points under EQ 4.4.: No Added Urea Formaldehyde.
Filter Enters the Commercial Building Market St. Paul
- 3M has introduced a line of Filtrete filters for commercial buildings. According to the company, FiltreteCommercial HVAC Filters may offer a marked return on investment by reducing energy, maintenance and life-cycle costs associated with traditional ventilation systems. Life-cycle costs may be reduced due to the filters' low airflow resistance, which may result in fan energy savings. 3M Technologies have also enabled extended service life, requiring fewer filter changeouts on an annual basis. Filtrete Commercial High Performance HVAC Filters with integral seals may help reduce air bypass. This may reduce particle deposits and cleaning costs for HVAC coils, ducts, and occupied
spaces. The potential savings are significant and major capital investments are not required to begin using Filtretefilters.
Floor Care Line Reformulated Sturtevant, Wis. - JohnsonDiversey has achieved a significant reduction in volatile organic compound (VOC) content in its line of floor finishes, the company reports. The first product in the JohnsonDiversey floor-finish line up to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standard is Signature ultra high-speed floor finish. The reformulated Signature maintains performance while VOC content has been reduced by 40 percent.
"We're committed to continuously improving our products to meet the highest standards of health, safety, environment and performance," said JohnsonDiversey President and CEO Ed Lonergan. "The CARB limit was a serious challenge, but once again we've shown it is possible to reduce the environmental impact of products while also maintaining high quality standards."
