Energy
As we become more and more entrenched in the digital age, we become more and more reliant upon energy. But the need for an external source of energy to get a job done isn't a new concept. It has taken the form of an ox pulling a plow or a foot pressing the pedal of a loom — both of which are sustainable, but very, very slow.
The Industrial Revolution introduced us to the benefits of machinery powered by coal-fired steam. While far more effective than an ox or a foot, it was also far from sustainable.
Today, we understand that fossil fuels aren't unlimited. We also understand that other, cleaner sources of energy are out there — we just have to understand them better to take advantage of what they offer.
In the meantime, effective, cleaner management of the resources we have — including reducing consumption — is essential if harnessing the sun, wind, earth and sea is going to make any difference for the future.
Cheers,
Derrick Teal ED+C Associate Editor
