Editor's Note

Welcome to this month's edition of ED+C's eNewsderrick2

Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day 2009, a time to celebrate the Earth and its environment as well as to increase awareness of the issues our planet faces.

Granted, one day just isn't enough to make a lasting difference. Every day should be Earth Day. And most, if not all, of ED+C's readers and readers of other green publications are aware of this and strive to do so. Even though people involved in green building reflect varying shades of green, at least they're aware to some degree and striving to make positive changes.

Earth Day--and every day--should be about effecting change with those who haven't taken any action. It's important to remember that while there are people who just don't care, others just plain haven't had their eyes opened to the benefits of sustainability. But a lot of progress has been made in increasing awareness regarding sustainable practices in people's everyday lives, and that's spilling over into the workplace. Awareness is a powerful motivator.

For me, it was when my wife and I were living in the Czech Republic. Lots of advertising on television would have you believe that Central Europe is still in the Dark Ages when it comes to technology. But the Czech Republic was also where I was seeing things like CFLs and on-demand hot water heaters for the very first time, and they were fairly commonplace. Seeing these products and a different lifestyle was definitely eye opening for me.

But what about you? I'm sure there are lots of other stories similar to mine. If you'd be willing to send them to me, I'd like to post your stories on our blog for others to see. Maybe your story will strike a chord and be the inspiration that sets someone on a new path. (And, yes, I'd love to get your industry-related stories, too.)

Cheers,

Derrick
