Judges awarded the highest honors to projects that balance comprehensive sustainability programs with good design. Tied for Second Place were D.C. restaurant Founding Farmers and the Boise, Idaho, North Face store. Three projects received Outstanding Merit awards. Judges also singled out six specific project elements for commendation.
The awards were launched at GlobalShop 2009 to encourage excellence in sustainable retail design. Projects that were submitted in the 2009 A.R.E. Design Awards competition were eligible, and entrants were invited to submit additional projects. Entries were reviewed electronically by A.R.E.’s Sustainability Council, a group of designers and suppliers with various perspectives and expertise in sustainable retail design. The winning projects are featured in the July/August Retail Environments magazine.
