ASID Announces Earth-Minded Awards Winners

The American Society of Interior Designers, in partnership with Hospitality Design (HD) magazine, announces the winners of the 2011 Earth-Minded Awards (EMAs). The EMAs honor interior designers, architects, manufacturers and students that have demonstrated a contribution to advancing sustainable design in the hospitality industry in three categories: Project, Product and Students.

Entries were judged on a variety of factors including materials selection, resource efficiency, recycling and waste management, design innovation, housekeeping practices and overall guest experience. Additionally, product entries were rated on social stewardship and third-party verification.

Judge Cliff Tuttle, ASID, LEED AP, senior vice president of ForrestPerkins, said the winning project "was not only a beautiful design, but also a model of social stewardship." Tuttle was also impressed with the product winner and runner-up, adding that they were "the complete package—aesthetics, durability, social responsibility and material innovation."

The 2011 winners are:

Hotel Andaluz in Albuquerque, New Mexico Gary Goodman, Goodman Realty Group, and Studio Southwest Architects

Hotel Andaluz is one of the first green renovations of a historic hotel in the United States. The project combines upscale boutique hospitality, historic preservation, and the latest green technology including an integrated Building Energy Management System.

LIVING FRESH bedding collection
Valley Forge Fabrics, Inc.

LIVING FRESH is made of a proprietary blend of Tencel+Plus Lyocell eucalyptus and cotton or polyester. Fiber from eucalyptus uses 100 times less water than traditional cotton when manufactured and reduces drying time by 75 percent. Tencel+Plus Lyocell is the only certified textile from eucalyptus engineered for hospitality.

Honorable Mention: PolyHide Lightning
Maya Romanoff

PolyHide Lightning is an eco-friendly alternative to vinyl and leather. It is made of low VOC, non-toxic polyurethane that is compliant with industry standards for indoor air quality.
