Collaborative Design, Ltd. in association with WE Monks and Company, the MEP Engineer, were the team to design Honda's state of the art energy efficient building. The new $1.9 million, 16,100-square-foot Honda Transmission Manufacturing opened in October, located at the Technical Center at the Russells Point, Ohio facility.
Honda had three key target goals, achieved with this project:
- Improved associate working environment
- 50% reduction in utility energy costs
- Minimum use of 25% recycled building materials
The building's theme was "facility Innovation" and the project incorporated 10 key green technologies in the design and construction. The green technologies implemented were: high r-value insulation levels: geo-thermal heating and cooling: radiant floor heating: direct digital controls: operable windows with low-e coating and insulated glass; light fixtures with F8 Lamps; occupancy sensors; and automatic light dimming control systems to maintain constant light levels in sunlit areas. Approximately 27 percent of construction material content was recycled building construction materials.
The project was registered with the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program, and is waiting for certification.
