The 2030 Challenge is a call-to-action for the building, design and construction industry to stabilize carbon emissions and then lower them over the next 10 years in both existing buildings and new construction. Buildings are responsible for almost half (48 percent) of all energy consumption and green house gas emissions annually; globally the percentage is even greater. Mazria will bring his message that without the cooperation of the design and building community in this effort, the crisis of global warming will become worse and irreparable.
The two full days of the Living Future conference are divided by “hosts” (AIA COTE and Cascadia). AIA COTE hosts “What Makes it Green?” on April 26, their annual program, which highlights projects by designers throughout the region.
On April 27, Cascadia rolls out interactive and lively educational sessions based on meeting the ‘Living Building Challenge.’ A special session, “15 Minutes of Brilliance,” will highlight four revolutionary ideas. Cascadia will unveil new sustainable development initiatives at a regional and national level, as well as the launch of a new lifetime achievement fellowship program to celebrate exemplary leadership in the Pacific Northwest in the field of sustainable design and development. Both days will be filled with technical training and interactive sessions, networking opportunities, sustainable building tours and eco-charettes. The entire event will conclude with a ‘Big Bang’ celebration of a dinner and gala that includes live music, dancing and networking opportunities.
Living Future is targeted to engage those in the fields of construction, design, government and real estate. Some of the sponsors of the program include BetterBricks, Callison, Mithun, City of Seattle, and King County’s Green Tools program and the 100 Friends of Cascadia. Ed Mazria’s keynote is presented in partnership with the City of Seattle’s Urban Sustainability Forum.
