T5 Florescent Lamps Feature Low Mercury Technology

Amsterdam, The Netherlands — Royal Philips Electronics newest high-output series of T5 fluorescent lamps feature low mercury ALTO technology. The slim Silhouette T5 fluorescent lamps combine this technology with T5 design flexibility, high efficacy and high lumen output. Ranging from 2 feet to 5 feet in length, these new lamps offer an average rated life of 20,000 hours, with 95 percent lumen maintenance for consistent light output over time. In addition, the ALTO-enabled T5 lamps have high color rendering properties, with a CRI of 85, the company says. Philips ALTO lamps were the first fluorescent lamps to pass the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test for non-hazardous waste.

New Electronic Ballasts Operate T8 Lamps

Rosemont, Ill. — Advance Transformer Co. has introduced two new electronic ballasts designed to operate T8 fluorescent lamps in residential applications. The new ballasts, Advance Catalog Numbers REB-232-SC and REB-4P32-SC, will operate F32T8, F25T8 or F17T8 lamps, while meeting Energy Star requirements. The REB-232-SC ballast will operate one or two lamps, while the REB-4P32-SC ballast will operate three or four lamps. Both meet the ballast requirements of the Energy Star Residential Lighting Fixture Program, the company says. The company also offers its new Optanium line of energy-efficient electronic ballasts for T8 fluorescent lighting systems. Available in two versions (a standard light output design with a .88 Ballast Factor and a low-watt design with a .78 Ballast Factor), the instant-start, high-efficiency designs substantially reduce ballast wattage losses compared with standard-efficiency units, the company says.

Low Mercury Linear T5 Lamps Introduced

Danvers, Mass. — Osram Sylvania introduces Pentron/Eco and Pentron Ho/Eco, low mercury linear T5 lamps that pass the Federal TCLP test. The performance characteristics of these lamps are identical to the Pentron T5 lamps Sylvania introduced in 1996 while engineered to meet the goals of developing products that are more energy efficient, offer longer service life and support the latest initiative for sustainable building designs, the company says. When used in luminaires specifically designed for these lamps, systems can produce between 5 percent and 20 percent more light than standard T8 systems of comparable input wattage. By combining Pentron/Eco and Pentron Ho/Eco lamps with Quicktronic PROStart PS and PHO ballasts, lamp life is 33 percent longer than T8/instant start systems and lamp starting is improved to up to 100,000 starts. These systems are suitable for applications using occupancy sensors and other lighting controls.

Florescent Ballast Features Infrared Dimmer

Coopersburg, Pa. — Lutron Electronics Co. Inc.’s new Eco-10 IR fluorescent ballast with built-in infrared dimmer is illustrated in the company's catalog. Designed to make individual fixture control simple to specify and install for both new construction and retrofit applications, the Eco-10 IR offers personal control of overhead lighting through the use of a handheld IR transmitter. The Eco-10 IR can be installed like standard non-dimming ballasts offering simple, individual fixture control. It can also be installed like a three-wire dimming ballast and used with a central control system—such as Lutron’s GRAFIK 6000, digital microWatt or RadioTouch—for optimal energy management.

This is a great article. There is a retrofit kit out on the market from a company called Lumiversal that seems to be the only UL listed T5 retrofit kit that I could find on the market in the US. Their kit also comes with a light diffuser for the bulbs and different reflectors to help with the glare. The seem geared for doing big commercial office building retrofits too. I would suggest checking them out and you can find them at www.lumiversal.com
