Held in Hesperia, CA, earlier this year, the first Planning Summit for Sustainable Building Codes addressed the role that building codes play in the environmental, economic, and social impacts of buildings. Summit participants worked to expand existing processes and create new models for building regulation that provide more sustainble options for building that take into consideration all who are affected by the construction of a building.

“Buildings have an enormous impact on the environment… however, we can’t change the way we build unless we change the building codes,” said Ned Daly, director of the environmental group Wood Reduction Clearinghouse, one of the organizers of the summit. The Turner Foundation, Global Green USA, and the Development Center for Appropriate Technology and other groups were involved. The City of Hesperia and Cal-Earth hosted the summit.
