San Antonio, Texas — A Seattle building materials supplier, a New York neighborhood and a Kansas City design firm are winners of this year's Sustainable Leadership Awards, presented by CoreNet Global at their Global Summit meeting in San Antonio in November in conjunction with the International Interior Design Association and the American Institute of Architects.

Presentations were made to the Environmental Home Center of Seattle, the Battery Park City neighborhood in lower Manhattan, BNIM Architects in Kansas City and the Netherlands-based bank, ABN AMRO, for their commitment to sustainable design and development.

CoreNet Global, a 7,500-member professional association of corporate real estate executives who manage $1.2 trillion worth of property around the world, presents the awards to for-profit companies and non-profit agencies whose commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility is exemplary. Sustainable design and development is a pillar of Corporate Real Estate 2010, CoreNet Global's major research and educational effort.

In the small to mid-sized business category, the 12-year old Environmental Home Center, an innovative retail operation that sources and sells a variety of sustainable building products including low-toxic paints, sustainably harvested wood and more. The company received a Sustainable Leadership Award for providing information and resources for those who want to build in an environmentally conscious manner.

Battery Park City is a 92-acre neighborhood that contains 5 million square feet of sustainable residential and commercial property in one of the most densely packed communities in the world. It was established under the auspices of the New York State Battery Park City Authority, a public benefit corporation, which established “Green Guidelines,” to which buildings in the area must adhere. Battery Park City won a Sustainable Leadership Award under the non-profit/government category.

BNIM Architects of Kansas City best exemplify the principles of environmentally designed buildings and have been an industry leader for more than three decades. They were tapped in the architecture/interior architecture category for helping to write the LEED industry guidelines on sustainable projects and for developing technological advances within the industry and beyond.

Netherlands-based ABN AMRO is a leading international bank and received a Sustainable Leadership Award for founding the Equator Principles, a voluntary set of guidelines for determining, assessing and managing social and environmental risk in project financing. ABN AMRO was also the first signatory to the Carbon Disclosure Project, which will help to increase transparency about their best practice efforts relating to climate change.

The Sustainable Leadership Awards are sponsored by the International Interior Design Association, the American Institute of Architects/Committees on the Environment and Interior Architecture, and CoreNet Global. Tandus, Johnson Controls, Haworth and Unicco underwrite the awards.
