Swinerton Builders recently completed the renovation of Altenheim Senior Housing, an historic senior living facility in Oakland’s Glenview/Dimond neighborhood.

The project was the seismic renovation and complete facility upgrade to the historic 1909 and 1915 buildings. While the structures maintain their historic appearance, Swinerton was able to work with non-profit housing developer Citizens Housing Corporation, Pyatok Architects Inc., and the Altenheim Association to add up-to-date seismic reinforcement and completely new plumbing and HVAC systems. There are now 93 studio and one-bedroom apartments and more than 10,000 square feet of community and service space.

There are also sustainable green touches like photovoltaic cells on the roof to provide solar power, a super-efficient hydronic heating system, pervious concrete in the parking lot to reduce runoff, and VOC-free carpeting and paint to reduce off-gassing.
