Fact checked by Andrew Carnegie

How to Keep Pants From Falling Down

There are many reasons why your trousers are sagging as you walk, sit, or stand. Believe it or not, it’s not always because of the size. Thankfully, there are just as many ways on how to keep pants from falling down.

That said, we know what you’re thinking—you can always wear a belt or suspenders, right? Well, these are only two of the five solutions that we would be discussing here so stay tuned!

Conventional Solutions to Keep Pants from Falling Down

1. Using Adjustable Clip-on Suspenders

Also known as braces, suspenders are either made of 100% stretchable material or a combination of leather and elastic straps with clips or buttons the wearer can use to attach to the pants or skirts.

To date, there are two types of suspenders sold in the market—the traditional suspenders and the HIKERS.

Both can be worn with or without a belt. Braces pull the pants up instead of cinching them, which is a great option for big-belly women and man body types.

1. Traditional Suspenders

Pant suspenders have been around for centuries. They’re designed as an alternative to belts. Traditional pant suspenders can be worn with dress pants, suits, or casual pants, and come in a variety of styles and materials, including leather, elastic, and silk.

Here’s how you put on suspenders properly:

Step 1: Wear your pants and attach the suspenders to the back of your trousers.

For Y-shaped suspenders, clip on the fastener at the center of the pant’s waist on the back.

For X-shaped suspenders, attach the right clip on the right side of your spine while the other clip goes to the left side.

Step 2: Pull your pants to the desired height. Then, button and zip them up in place. Next, grab your suspenders’ front straps and pull them toward the front.

Whether you’re wearing Y-shaped or X-shaped suspenders, the straps should diverge or intersect around the center of your back.

Step 3: Adjust the straps to ensure that they are holding your waistband in place.

Then, attach the clasp or clip of each strap onto the waistband forming two vertical parallel lines of your front torso. Lastly, slide the metal buckles up and down for a snugger fit.

2. Modern-day Suspenders from Hikers®

These under-shirt braces can be attached to the button of your pants in the front while the back strap goes to the belt loop.

2. Wear a Belt

Besides tightening your pants, belts are also a stylish way to introduce a new color to your outfit. Plus, you can use clip-on holsters for your essentials if you don’t like bulking up your trousers’ pockets with large smartphones or thick wallets.

However, these straps tend to scrunch the excess fabrics of the shirt and pants, which can be uncomfortable.

Here are some hacks to keep pants up using your belt without messing with your shirt:

  • Ensure that your top is tailored to fit you to lessen the amount of fabric that could bunch up when you tighten the belt.
  • Choose a shirt with at least three inches of fabric from the waist down so it does not get untucked easily.
  • Try the “ .” Grab the excess fabric on either side of your shirt and fold them backward. Then, tuck them in and close the pants’ button and zipper.

3. Get Your Pants Tailored

Despite the wide range of sizes, mass-produced does not fit every body type like a glove. If you want to wear your pants without suspenders or belts, take your pants to the tailor for alteration.

Alternative Solutions

1. Shrink Your Cotton Pants

Trousers made of cotton can shrink when subjected to high heat. Just immerse your pants in a stock pot of boiling water.

In 5 to 20 minutes, you will notice that they will reduce in size. The longer they bathe in hot water the more they will shrink.

Note that we only recommend this trick for older trousers that are no longer covered by the warranty. If your new jeans slide down, check with the manufacturer to see if they can replace them with a different size.

2. Put on Waist-tighteners

Fashion Tiktokers are raving about the waist-tightening clips that they found on popular e-commerce sites. They come in a wide variety of designs so you will have to check the product’s instructions on how to fasten them onto your pants.

A similar product called Belt Bro is also available in several online stores. Unlike the clips, these elastic bands are supposed to be attached to two belt loops on either side of your hips. You can adjust the straps to your desired fit.

Reasons Why Pants Fall Down

1. It’s hard to keep pants up with a big belly

Even with the correct size, fat people’s pants fall down when their bellies push them down. Just the same, your trousers will look and feel loose if you shed a few pounds through a weight loss program.

2. Your body type is not suited for standard store-bought pants.

Slimmer hips and buttocks lack the surface for the pants to hold on to. Likewise, many trousers do not fit those with fuller derriere and smaller waists well.

3. Your pants keep falling down due to constant wear.

The waistbands of older jeans tend to buckle and curl because the bulging stomachs push them down. Meanwhile, models with garter waistbands typically lose their elasticity because they are constantly stretched whenever they are worn. That’s why your jeans fall down after frequent use.

4. The design and material of your trousers are probably to blame.

Some of you probably wondered, “My pants fit perfectly. Why do they slide down when I sit or stand?”

One possible reason is that your trousers are probably made of silk or fabric with a similar texture. The other factor is that perhaps the trousers have a very low rise.

Tips to Prevent Pants From Falling Down in the Future

  • Avoid stretchy jeans as their elasticity weaken the more you wear them. Opt for pure denim as it is better at retaining its shape.
  • Choose trousers with mid- or high-rises because these styles wrap around the curvy areas of your hips and waist. Meanwhile, the waistbands of most low-rise pants are positioned around the hips.
  • Take the time to measure your waist and inseam and check the manufacturer’s size guide. As much as possible, try the pants out in person to ensure that they truly fit you well.

Remember, Your older pants are not a reliable reference since worn-out fabrics naturally loosen up.

FAQs

How can I tell if my pants are the right size?

It depends on the type of pants that you are wearing but generally speaking, the trousers should fit you well from the waist down to the leg opening.

Whether they are skinny jeans or baggy trousers, you should be able to fasten and unfasten the button without a struggle. On top of that, the seat and thigh area should not restrict your movement when you march, sit, or squat.

Another way to check is by pinching the pants that you are wearing while you are standing. You can tell that you got the right size if you successfully grasped an inch or half of the fabric.

If you’re pinching too much, the pants are probably too loose. If you could barely grab a portion of the fabric, the pants are too tight.

Reasons why belts don’t always work

  • Your pants can fall even with a belt on because its belt holes are far few in between. It would either feel too tight or too loose.
  • Though some belt materials may be stretchable, others cannot expand as your tummy enlarges after you eat and drink throughout the day.
  • You lack curvy hips or buttocks to support the belt.

What types of pants to wear when I have a big belly?

Your trousers should be neither tight nor loose. Baggy pants may seem like the most sensible choice, but they are not flattering to plus-sized folks as they magnify the shape of your body. Meanwhile, form-fitting clothes could emphasize your bulges.

Conclusion

Because each body type is unique, we cannot expect fashion brands to make trousers that fit us perfectly. In this day and age, however, you are no longer limited to belts and suspenders when you’re trying to figure out how to keep pants from falling down.

If you don’t have the time to wait for the tailor to finish altering your trousers, try those waist-tightening clips or straps. After all, most e-commerce apps can now ship within the day!
